You’re a little anxious and not sure if you can pull off that look you’ve pictured in your mind over and over again. Maybe you have styled hair extensions before and not totally at sea, maybe you just need some tips to guide you so you are sure you’re on the right path. Either way, you’re bound to learn one or two from here by the time we’re done so please keep reading.
Blending In
If you managed to purchase hair extensions that look and feel similar to that of your natural hair’s texture and color, then you’ve checked the first step of this point already. Blending in is a very important part of styling hair extensions and I don’t think this needs to be explained any further.
Simply put; You do not want to be looking like a project gone wrong when walking around or going about your day. This is why it is very important to straighten your hair extensions together with your hair and not separately like most people do. You also want to go easy on the brushing if you don’t want your extensions to become loose or slipping down throughout the day.
Using The Right Products
In styling natural hair extensions and keeping human hair moisturized, you need to desist from using too much oil. I understand you want to keep your hair looking hydrated and attractive but adding up too much oil would only make it too slippery to the touch and extremely shiny, something we don’t want. Try using a shine spray or polish to give you some sheen instead. These also help tame fly-always. Mousse made for natural hair conditions and provides volume and hold without causing build-ups. Using a holding spray after straightening or curling helps leave outs and hair extensions styles last longer. Avoid Hair Care Products that contain sulfate and alcohol, as these products tend to strip the hair extensions off their natural oils and make them dry and frizzy.
This is why using natural hair type products is very important here. Heat protect sprays should always be applied before tonging or before heat is applied to hair extensions (as should be practiced with any other human hair).
Keep Styling to a Minimum for Longer Lifespan
No doubt you’re a creative person who likes to change hairstyles every now and then to feel more alive. You get bored easily with one hair color or the same hairstyles, so you sometimes want to switch things up a bit. No problem at all! It is true that real human hair extensions maintain their shape and texture even when styled in various ways or dyed and so on, and you are basically free to get as creative as you want more than you could in the case of synthetic hair, but just remember not to go crazy if the lifespan of your extensions means a lot to you. ‘Nuff said.
Invest in the Right Tools
The right hair brush alone can do more magic to your human hair extensions than you could possibly imagine. Using tools like the essential oil comb, the round brush & paddle brush really makes a difference when blow-drying, styling, and de-tangling your human hair. A hair extensions hangers for instance, serve as a great way to style your human hair with ease before fixing them on you.
Cheap straighteners won’t do your hair justice the way a more pricey straightener would. If you ask me, I’ll say invest in the right tools, and you’ll save yourself a whole lot of headache and time. Not forgetting the amount of effort you’ll put into styling and getting things done.
Store Extensions the Right Way
If you store your extensions the right way, it will be much easier to style them the next time you want to. Depending on the way your hair extension is styled, you can either wrap it up gently in a hair extension storage bag (on a hanger if you have one), or just improvise with a protective style by making it into a braid and putting a silk scarf or head wrap over it.
