5 Oily Skin Myths You Need To Stop Believing

Having oily skin and trying to maintain a suitable skin care routine can be very tricky. Once that T-zone starts shining, it’s almost impossible not to reach for drying products and harsh cleansers. This may seem like a good solution, but in reality it can’t be any further from the truth. There are many more myths surrounding oily skin – here are the most common ones.

#1 Oily skin needs more cleansing

As I mentioned above – this is just a myth. All skin needs to be cleansed, but doing it more than twice a day is just excessive. If you wash your face a couple of times a day in order to “remove” the oiliness, you’ll only end up causing the opposite effect and make your skin even oilier. Excessive cleansing will strip off natural oils, causing your skin to overcompensate and produce more oils. Instead of doing this, try to wash your face twice a day – in the morning and before going to bed.

#2 Exfoliate daily for shine – free skin

Scrubbing your face every day won’t make your skin less oily. Yes, getting rid of all bacteria buildup and dead skin cells is essential for clear, healthy complexion, but overdoing it can damage your skin and dry it out. Make sure you keep a healthy balance in your skin care routine and exfoliate once or twice a week. To make your own natural scrub, you can quickly stir up a tablespoon of olive oil and some sugar and gently rub the mixture on your skin. Or you can simply choose a facial scrub from your favorite skincare brand. Anything goes as long as you remember to exfoliate regularly.

#3 Oily skin doesn’t need to be moisturized

One of the worst skin care myths ever! All skin types need moisturizing – this is probably the most important step to healthy skin. Regular moisturizing reduces the appearance of wrinkles and skin issues like acne, redness and irritation and keeps the skin soft, radiant and youthful. Sounds amazing, right? If you have oily skin, don’t be afraid to moisturize daily. I promise, it won’t make your skin oilier. It’s all about choosing the right product for your skin type – in this case, a lightweight, mattifying formula.

#4 Facial oils will make your skin even oilier

Sounds pretty logical – why would you add more oils to your already oily skin? Truth is, again, all skin types need proper hydration and nourishment. Facial oils are extremely important to maintaining beautiful, youthful skin. Adding this product to your skin care routine will moisturize, soften and rejuvenate your skin, improve the evenness of skin texture and give it a healthy glow. For best results, pick a facial oil or a serum that’s lightweight, non-greasy and easily absorbed.

#5 Oily skin doesn’t need sunscreen

Fact: all skin types need sunscreen. UV rays are extremely harmful for the skin and can cause major damage on the long run. If you don’t protect your skin from the sun, you’re just increasing the chances of getting wrinkles early in life and even worse – skin cancer. So why risk your skin’s health? Yes, creams containing SPF are considered to be heavy, but there are so many lightweight formulas out there that are specifically made for oily skin. To slow down the aging process and prevent skin cancer, make sure you use sunscreen every day, no matter if it’s sunny outside or not.
