The thing about fashion trends is that they are cyclic. Every 20 years, more or less, old fashion trends resurface more popularly named “The 20-Year Rule.” What may seem redundant and old-fashioned will grasp attention mainly of the latest generation after 20-30 years. “Stranger Things” fans would have connected the dots by now. The cast’s 80’s outfits have led to much speculation, especially the scrunchies, overly bright clothes, and suspenders. Similarly, the fashion from “That 70’s Show” was inspired during the 90’s through 2006.

Jame Lavier’s 50 Year Theory:

On the other hand, James Laver, a fashion theorist, and historian introduced a law to describe the fashion trend life cycle, which was backed up by Stanley Marcus, the former president of Neiman Marcus, who used his law to stock his store in the late 1960’s.

According to his theory, the trend that is in fashion is ‘smart,’ and it takes a particular trend around 50 years to recapture the market. However, although trends do cycle around, there needs to be a reason behind its return; otherwise, it’s just a costume.

Shoulder pads are a great example that follows this theory. Originally included in the football kits for men, it made its way into the feminine fashion industry when in the 30’s, during World War II, when a fourth of women were allowed to leave the house to work. This trend resurfaced in the 80’s when women were breaking the glass ceiling. It became an essential part of a working woman’s dressing during that time.

Hemline Theory:

It might come as a shock to you, but the global economy does affect the fashion trends that go around. During a time of an economic crisis people tend to invest in simpler longer-lasting clothes rather than trendy or flashy ones.

This trend was first noticed by the economist George Taylor in the 1920’s who linked the economy with the length of women’s skirts, the “hemline.” This theory was that the better the economy was, the higher the hemline, as women dressed up in shorter skirts to show off the fancy stockings and pricey ornaments they were wearing. Similarly, when the times were worse, the hemlines went down, allowing them to hide the fact that they couldn’t afford expensive silk stockings.

Quarterly Cycles

Fashions designers have noticed that fashion trends repeat every quarter of a century, that is, 25 years. The shape might be slightly different, and the material might be of some other nature, but the overall fashion style does repeat. For example, towards the end of the Soviet Union in 1995, clothes with Russian prints became very popular in Paris. Similarly, 25 years later, when ISIS is the leading threat all over the world, clothes with Arabic wordings have become popular.

Vintage Clothing

A piece of clothing is said to become “vintage” after about 20 years. This is why the clothes of your mother or your grandmother may seem cool and inspiring. People tend to like clothing from their mother’s or grandmother’s era as they are quite different from the current fashion. This is why fashion trends tend to repeat after 20-25 years.

Celebrity’s Role in the Repetition of Fashion

An important community of people that represent the fashion of the time are celebrities. Celebrities keep their fashion up-to-date and essentially define the fashion of the era. A trend of repeating fashion from the 90’s can be seen in their dressing recently. Take black leather skirts, for instance. Elegantly worn by Mariah Carey back in the 90’s, model Bella Hadid repeated this trend in a London show in 2017. Black leather skirts have become very common and popular among teenagers since then.

Another fashion trend that circled around is the turtle neck sweaters — worn back in the ’90s by the likes of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and James Franco. These turtle necks had reappeared when Nick Jonas was seen at the 2015 American Music Awards wearing a white turtle neck under a suit.

Fanny packs had made an appearance again since the 90 were when Kendall Jenner was seen wearing one with a rainbow bodysuit of her very own brand Kendall and Kylie. George from ‘Seinfeld’ was originally had these as a part of his wardrobe.
